Shannon Vineyards Semillon 2015 and Rockview Ridge Pinot Noir 2015 awarded Top 100 SA Wines status

James and Stuart Downes, owners of Shannon Vineyards, are justifiably proud to have two of their wines honoured by an illustrious panel of international and local judges in the National Wine Challenge / Top 100 SA Wines 2016.

“We are delighted that both our Semillon 2015 and Rockview Ridge Pinot Noir 2015 have been lauded with Double Platinum and Top 100 SA Wines 2016 status, affirming that cool-climate Elgin delivers excellence across the varietal range. What’s most rewarding to Shannon Vineyards is that the quality of our cool-climate grapes has been recognised by an outstanding panel of wine judges. Elgin is slowly creating a reputation for its Semillons and we believed we had a winner with our Semillon 2015. So having our Semillon 2015 awarded Grand Cru National Champion ‘Best in Class’ is an added bonus. And with 2015 proving to be one of the best Pinot Noir vintages from the Elgin region, we are overjoyed that our Rockview Ridge Pinot Noir stood out in a very competitive vintage and category”, enthused an upbeat James Downes.

The Shannon Vineyards Semillon 2015 is the 5th vintage from a small 12 year-old 0,5 hectare vineyard in Elgin. The naturally fermented Semillon is matured on the lees for 3 months in 100% new French oak. It expresses a very distinctive musky nose combining ginger, quinine, lime zest and cardamom in a minerally and flinty style. A fuller mouth feel adds to the complexity of the wine. It is round on entry, then dense and concentrated in the middle, with a saline element giving the spice and citrus flavours a tactile feel that remind one of an Old World version of this grape. This wine was vinified in a style that enhances the aging potential of Semillon. The Shannon Vineyards Semillon 2015 retails at approximately R195.

The Shannon Vineyards Rockview Ridge Pinot Noir 2015 is naturally fermented and each parcel of grapes from 4 different clones is vinified and matured separately (12 months using a blend of 3 Burgundian cooperages - 30% new oak) before blending. The wine displays typical Burgundian complexity, with ripe cherry, raspberry, and strawberry notes backed by hints of truffle, mushroom, and spice. Elegant and textured, it shows a firm lively structure, smooth ripe tannins, terrain-driven minerality, and an impressive purity of fruit. This Pinot Noir has great depth and long, lingering power at the finish. The Shannon Vineyards Rockview Ridge Pinot Noir 2015 retails at approximately R275.
