Regarded as one of SA’s leading port producers De Krans Wine Cellar, situated in Calitzdorp, has also built a reputation for producing a range of unique and superb wines from classical varieties. With the emphasis on unique yet traditional, consumers can look forward to the new vintages of De Krans Free-Run Chenin Blanc 2017 and De Krans Wild Ferment Unwooded Chardonnay 2017.
What makes De Krans Free-Run Chenin Blanc stand out from traditional Chenin Blanc is that only free run juice – approximately two-thirds of the total juice – can be used to make the wine, which results in a fresh, well-rounded product. A Gold medal winner at the 2016 Michelangelo Wine Awards as well as the Champion White Wine at the 2015 Klein Karoo Young Wine Show, winemaker Louis van der Riet describes the wine as showing a tropical freshness on the nose.
An abundance of soft fresh tropical fruits, a well-rounded smooth structure and a lingering aftertaste, are prominent on the palate. Perfect on its own during a hot Sunday braai or enjoy with fresh snoek, barbeque chicken, or pastas and salads.
No yeast is added to produce De Krans Wild Ferment Chardonnay, as the fermentation process starts naturally. Once the fermentation is completed, the wine is kept on its fine lees for a further six months before bottling. Great care goes into the making of this wine, allowing for added complexity in its flavour and taste profiles. Louis describes the wine as being a beautiful lime yellow colour with a full, elegant nose of citrus and butterscotch.
A well-rounded wine with flavours of lime, grapefruit and butterscotch on the palate, with a lingering, complex aftertaste and a well- integrated acidity. This wine goes very well with tuna and Yellowtail.
