Cookies & Cream, which started selling ice-cream sandwiches at markets in Cape Town in 2014, has now opened its first stand-alone dessert bar in the centre of the city. (Don’t confuse them with Crumbs & Cream – this is a separate ice cream sandwich brand). After playing the food-market field as much as they could, owner and baker Terri-Lee Lockhart and the Cookies & Cream team have finally built their dream shop at 87 Buitengracht Street, ready to serve American-style ice-cream cookie sandwiches, waffles and other confections.
Everything is made in-house with the best local ingredients available. The free-range eggs are delivered fresh from the farm and the chocolate used is direct-trade and ethically sourced, as are the Fair Trade coffee beans.
As for the menu of sweet treats, the dessert bar is whipping up its signature cookie sandwiches and bubble waffles – the trendy treat from Hong Kong and New Yorkthat flooded our Instagram feeds last year – filled with home-made ice cream. Cookie flavours will include 55%-cocoa Chocolate Chunk, Birthday Cake Funfetti, Old-fashioned Peanut Butter, Snickerdoodle, and a gluten-free Brown-Butter Chocolate version. The cookies and the bubble waffles will serve as the vessels for ice cream flavours such as classic Double Cream, Red-Velvet Cake with actual cake chunks and cream-cheese frosting, Oreos and Cream, Chocolate, and Crunchy Peanut Butter. To top it all off, customers can add colourful garnishes like sprinkles, cookies and nuts.
Cookies & Cream is now scooping at 87 Buitengracht Street, Tuesday to Sunday from 11am to 9pm.
