A Touch of Madness Restaurant and Bar – an Observatory institution – reopened its doors on Friday 15 April under the new ownership of long-time Observatory residents Richard Andrew and Olivia Andrews.
In line with the establishment’s sustainability ethos (which includes comprehensive recycling and composting systems) the vintage décor of this quirky and eclectic venue has been sourced from markets and second-hand shops around Cape Town. It’s both well suited to the grand Victorian house and reflects the owners’ offbeat personalities.
The menu is influenced by street food, and features local favourites like bunny chows and snoek samosas as well as global superstars like sliders, hot dogs, falafels, mezze platters, spring rolls, chicken satay skewers and tacos. Most items have a vegetarian or vegan option.
To drink, there’s a well-curated range of local craft beers (on tap and bottled), good wine by the glass and great coffee. To minimise its plastic output neither bottled water nor straws are offered. A Touch of Madness’s multi-purpose function room will be available for community meetings and private functions, and the establishment will also host fun events like poetry, music and quiz nights.
