Situated 15 kilometres from Stellenbosch along Route 44, framed against the slopes of the Helderberg lies Yonder Hill Wines.
Inanda, meaning ‘Place of Beauty’ in Zulu, is a blend of Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot. “The wine has a complex nose, with a mixture of roasted coffee beans and dark chocolate aromas expertly complemented by vibrant red fruits,” says the winemaker. “Inanda has an elegant, well balanced structure that is ready to drink or can be cellared for up to 4 to 6 years.
Notably, it has been awarded with a silver Veritas award as well as a 3.5 star Platter.
The winemaking process
The berries of the four cultivars ripen at different stages of the harvest. Each cultivar is therefore harvested and fermented separately in stainless steel tanks. After blending and secondary fermentation (malolactic fermentation) the blend is matured for 13 months in 225l French oak barrels.
In the vineyard
The vineyards are five years old and planted along the northern slopes of the farm. The vines are trained onto a five-wire trellis system to maximise exposure to the sunlight and sea breeze from False Bay. The use of minimal handling and insecticides shows the approach towards enviro-friendly farming methods.
Tip: pair the wine with a luscious oxtail stew.
Wine tastings cost R30.00 per person and this includes: pre-drinks, 4 wines and a tasting of Olyfberg olive products. Cellar tours with winemaker, Abé Beukes, are also available by appointment. You can also book a cheese and wine tasting at R85.00 per person. The platter includes, 4 cheeses, Olyfberg Olive Products, a selection of biscuits and bread.
