#moonlightmass is the brain child of Daniel Graham and Elad Kirshenbaum, and is a casual night bicycle ride starting at the Green Point Circle on a full moon once a month, twice if you’re lucky.
It all started in January this year, when the two were sitting at a café in Sea Point, and Daniel thought how great it would be to ride their bikes along the promenade under the full moon. One thing lead to another and the idea turned into a social experiment on Twitter. They tweeted about the ride, time and date, and waited patiently to see who would join the debut #moonlightmass (originally known as #moonlightmeander). Since then the ride has been gaining popularity and on the last ride there were over 250 riders raising awareness for cycling in the city and the safety of cyclists in the urban environment.
How do I get involved?
All you have to do is show up! The #moonlightmass meets on the full moon each month at 21:00 under the Green Point turning circle. Bring anything with a wheel that uses your own energy to move forward. Working brakes and safety lights are a good idea, as well as a helmet. The ride is mostly flat (easy for first time riders) and about 12km’s – a slow ride, not a race, so it takes about an hour to do.
The route starts under the Green Point turning circle and goes along Granger Bay Boulevard through the Waterfront on to the docks and out on Beach Road and into the Moullie Point Promenade up Three Anchor Bay Road left onto the Fan Mile cycle lane. Everybody regroups at the bottom of the fan mile on Long Street and take over Long Street en mass!
Most years have twelve full moons that occur approximately monthly. In addition to those twelve full lunar cycles, each solar calendar year contains roughly eleven days more than the lunar year of 12 lunations. The extra days accumulate, so every two or three years there is an extra full moon. August 2012 is your lucky month! The dress code for the ride on 31 August is BLUE.
