Something Special in Sea Point

Having only recently made the move from the ’burbs to the Atlantic Seaboard I am still discovering new spots in and around the area. I already have a few favourites but these are mostly in Moullie Point and Green Point, which are more than a leisurely stroll from my front door.

Then my flatmate (who avoids gluten like the plague) came home one morning  raving about this new spot called Cravings. And, it was just up my street. Literally. So I called up my breakfast-buddy who, like me, is a bit of a health nut (ok, part-time health nut), and we met there the following Saturday.

It was a particularly chilly morning but Cravings is all kinds of cozy. The quirky décor is welcoming and there’s a bit of a diner feel to the place. There is a deli counter in the front where you can choosesalad and sandwich fillers and see thedaily specials, and the walls are lined with fun foodie products like jars of candy, dried fruit, dips, syrups and jams.

Mel and Michelle —the couple who own Cravings— are the obvious source of the venue’s quirkiness and fun. As we sipped our soya lattes and browsed the menu, laid back Mel read the newspaper while Michelle buzzed in and out, keeping us entertained with stories of their backgrounds.

Cravings is clearly aimed at the morehealth-conscious eater. It serves hot and cold breakfasts, salads, wraps, sandwiches and light lunches. They also have fresh fruit and vegetable juices, smoothies and delicious fat-free and dairy-free soups. To top it all, they have the most amazing fat-free frozen yogurt. It was so good we didn’t mind the side order of brain-freeze in the middle of winter.

My friend and I both had fresh fruit juices and the gluten-free pancakes with banana and strawberry (pictured below). They were tasty and fluffy—surprising for something so healthy.

Interestingly, Mel’s son Steve is the owner of S.W.E.A.T 1000 and was named one of the top 20 fitness experts by Vogue magazine. He has given his fitness-guru stamp of approval to the healthy dishes on the menu. Cravings also stock SWEAT 1000 Bodyfuel, the Ultimate Protein Shake for those pursuing the perfect bod.

I find there’s a slight lack of venues that cater for health-conscious eaters in Cape Town. Cravings has carved a bit of a niche in the area and it’s quickly becoming a firm favourite amongst locals.

Cravings also sell:

  • Calorie-free, sugar-free, carbohydrate-free, gluten-free (flatmate, I hope you’re reading this) range of salad dressings, pasta sauces, BBQ sauces, ketchup, caramel and chocolate dips, pancake syrups and jams.
  • Oil-free and carb-free chicken mince, tuna and smoked salmon burgers.
  • They prepare meals on request for those with special dietary requirements and cater for dinner parties too.
  • They will also prepare picnic baskets and gift hampers all year round.

Cravings is open for breakfast and lunch and you’ll find them on 77 Regent Street, Sea Point. Call them on 021 21 434 5200 or visit their Facebook page to find out more.
