The wait is finally over for art lovers as the Zeitz MOCAA has just opened its doors to the public this Friday, 22 September.
Zeitz MOCAA and The Silo Hotel occupy the historic grain silo building in Cape Town’s V&A Waterfront. The Silo Hotel has been built in the grain elevator portion of the historic grain silo complex and occupies the six floors above the museum. The museum occupies the floors below the hotel as well as the 42 grain silos themselves.
Here's everything you need to know about the trendiest new art museum that everyone is talking about:
1. It's the Biggest Art Museum in Africa
It is the first of its kind, and is solely dedicated to the permanent exhibition of contemporary art from African and the Diaspora.
MOCAA stands for Museum of Contemporary Art Africa. It will be a contemporary art museum similar to the likes of the Tate Modern in London, MoMA in New York and Museo Nacional del Prado in Madrid. Established in 2013 Zeitz MOCAA is a not-for-profit partnership between the V&A Waterfront and Jochen Zeitz, whose collection forms part of the museum’s founding collection.
2. Located in the Silo Hotel
The Silo Hotel and Zeitz MOCCA has been built in the grain elevator portion of the historic grain silo complex. The Silo is a celebration of art, style, architecture and design. A tribute to timeless glamour and contemporary luxury.
3. Who is Jochen Zeitz?
Jochen Zeitz is the former CEO of PUMA and was the youngest CEO in German history to head a public company at the age of 30.
4. The Interior was Designed with a Grain of Corn in Mind
The exterior of the grain silo building, consisting of The Silo Hotel and Zeitz MOCAA, as well as the interior of the museum was designed by renowned industrial designer Thomas Heatherwick, The inside was modeled out of a real grain of corn that was digitally scanned and used to create the frame that one can see from the museum’s atrium.
5. What You Can Expect to See
