Don't miss these exhibitions coming up at 99 Loop Gallery:

We Came at a Time

Katrine Claassens, Snow Bird (Detail)

Katrine Claassens, Snow Bird (Detail)

This collection of sketches & paintings is inspired by Claassens's recent trip to Antarctica as the official artist accompanying the latest SA Agulhas scientific research venture. On Saturday 5th August, 99 Loop is hosting a lecture & discussion on climate change, art and our effects on the furthest reaches of nature with the artist and Associate Prof. Marcello Vichi, director of the Marine Research Institute at the University of Cape Town.

With Antarctica birthing one of the largest icebergs ever recorded between the 10th and 12th of July this year, and the severe drought in Western Cape, climate change has been nipping at the corners of our minds.

Using melted Antarctic sea-ice, water-colour and oil, Claassens’s paintings create space to remember, to mourn, and most importantly to emphasise our melting world. Drawing on her work, research and experiences both in the Arctic and Antarctic regions, the works touch upon humanity’s fingerprints at furthest, wildest reaches of the earth.

The Art of Making It

Jonathan Van der Walt, Striving for the Idea - Maurizio Cattelan

Jonathan Van der Walt, Striving for the Idea - Maurizio Cattelan

Sasol New Signatures Finalist Jonathan van der Walt is exhibiting his latest series of sculptures with 99 Loop.

Craftsmanship in contemporary sculpture production is the main area of focus in this collection, which explores the tendency of big-name contemporary artists to be physically uninvolved in the making of their own work. Van der Walt focuses on celeb artists like Jeff Koons and Damien Hirst, who take up the role of an art director in charge of hundreds of assistants. His beautifully crafted sculptures examine the intersection of skill and celebrity.

Who: Jonathan van der Walt
When: 07 – 23 September
Where: 99 Loop St, Cape Town
