Zonnebloem, one of South Africa's most enduring wine brands, has just released the new threesome of its distinctive Limited Edition wines. This year, the Limited Edition selection consists of a Sauvignon Blanc that already made its mark at Veritas, a Shiraz as well as a Chenin Blanc, a newcomer to this select Zonnebloem range.Zonnebloem Sauvignon Blanc Limited Edition 2009 clinched a gold medal at this year's prestigious Veritas Awards, whilst the Zonnebloem Chenin Blanc Limited Edition 2009 and Zonnebloem Shiraz Limited Edition 2007 were also medal contenders. Only the best barrels from selected vineyard blocks are chosen for the Zonnebloem Limited Edition range and the wines vary from vintage to vintage according to the winemakers' selection in the cellar. These wines are handcrafted and slowly coaxed to perfection allowing the grapes time to express their true character and optimal quality. Zonnebloem Sauvignon Blanc Limited Edition 2009 is made of grapes selected from vineyards growing mainly in the Darling area with 30% hailing from Stellenbosch. “This full-bodied wine is rich in typical Sauvignon blanc aromas such as green peppers, green fig, freshly cut grass and asparagus with the green fig and asparagus flavours that follow through to the palate,” is how winemaker Deon Boshoff describes this Veritas gold medallist. Perfect for summertime, enjoy this Sauvignon Blanc on its own or serve it with pasta and chicken dishes with light, mildly flavoured sauces. Zonnebloem Chenin Blanc Limited Edition 2009 is made of grapes handpicked from dryland vineyards growing in the Darling region. On the nose this complex and full-bodied wine is heady with prominent guava and pineapple flavours, whilst the palate rewards with a creamy texture and a delicious explosion of pineapple flavours. Boshoff recommends that you savour this wine on its own or serve it as the perfect accompaniment to fish, white meats and fresh salads. Zonnebloem Shiraz Limited Edition 2007 is made of grapes handpicked from vineyards situated in the Stellenbosch Kloof, Helderberg and Devon Valley areas. In the cellar, each vineyard was vinified separately. “This Shiraz with its deep ruby colour is rich in ripe berry and plum aromas with traces of leather and oak spices on the nose, whilst the palate is full and rich with a complex medley of berry flavours, gentle tannins and integrated wood flavours,” says Bonny van Niekerk, winemaker of Zonnebloem red wines. Savour it on its own or serve it with game or red meat dishes. |
