Get to Know Your Fish Print E-mail

Do you know if your favourite type of seafood is being illegally fished, is endangered, or if the fish stocks are being overexploited? Most of us don’t even think twice about our seafood choices. It’s time to start making informed seafood decisions. And the World Wildlife Fund has made it easy for us.

Just log onto www.wwfsassi.co.za and check out the South African Sustainable Seafood Initiative’s Seafood Species list which informs you about the conservation status of fish.

Green: relatively healthy and well-managed populations which can sustain current fishing pressure.

Orange: may be legally sold, but increased demand will compromise a sustainable supply—due to things such as over-fishing or the method used results in high by-catch etc.

Red: are illegal to buy or sell in SA.

Out at a restaurant? Find out if the catch of the day is endangered, just SMS the name of the fish to 079 499 8795 to find out if it’s on the green, orange or red list.
